Our dog Misty is a tri-clored cocker spaniel who gets matted fur all the time. We've tried grooming here every week or so but she just got the matted fur back after just one day! We have a lot of "stickers" in our yard which she likes to roll around in which I believe is causing it, by getting her hair tangled together. So how do we keep her fur untangled when she won't stay out of those weeds?

If they are burrs, they'll come out of the coat easier if you rub baby oil or peanut butter on them, but it will be a never ending battle unless you remove them from your yard.

I didn't know about the baby oil or PB trick, but I have heard that conditioner will help a little. Just don't let her get wet when you know that she has them, this only tightens them more.

If the mats are big, then you are most likely going to have to cut the fur a little, there are mat shredders that you can buy (they look like tiny rakes but with knives) and that helps cut it up a bit.

Like Ann said the best solution for you is to get rid of those plants at the roots. I know what you go through though, we have a few of them around here too.

Have you considered having your Cocker's fur cut back a bit? Having short fur (not shaved) will make this considerably easier for you!

I think I posted a little bit about this topic, here's a link if you want to take a quick peek: https://k9academy.forumotion.com/dog-grooming-f9/how-to-get-rid-of-mats-t284.htm

yeah...i was just thinking that too..maybe cutting the hair a bit shorter than usual? then this way you dont have to worry about uneven hair if you have to cut matts out. if its shorter..it might not matt.

good luck!

My groomer had to shave our havanese pup yesterday because of his matts.
I brush him every day and use a detangler spray. I swear I don't know where they come from. His undercoat is pretty thick and that is what matts up.
I cannot wait until his hair grows in a bit. He looks so silly with no hair Sad

I have a lops and a shitzu and both matts bad since they are both long hair dogs. . I take very small very sharp sissors and cut through the large matts a couple of times. then finger pull the three cuts apart. This way I don't cut to much hair off the dogs. I also, use thinning sissors in breaking up the matts so, it only takes out a small amount of hair rather than a chunk of hair. It seems to work quiet well for my dogs. I hope this helps some of you.

I think cutting the hair short will remove the matted hair. They said that there are shampoos for that but I bet they are not effective and they're just advertisements.
