What time do you think is best for a pup to go home and why? Many believe that the later the better because the pup has had more interaction with other dogs (litter mates and mother) and others think that its best earlier because the owner can then socialize the pup. What are your opinions on the matter?

A good breeder will socialize pups. Until a pup has it's immunizations, it should only have a limited amount of socialization anyway. Several states have laws stating that pups can't be sold until the age of 8 weeks. I think there's good logic behind those laws. I see irresponsible breeders selling pups at 4 weeks, or as soon as they are weaned. I think that's a huge mistake.

In Iowa the law is 8 weeks. I feel that the longer they stay in the litter the easier they are to socialize once they are on thier own. I picked Chip up at 8.5 weeks and would have left him one more week if others would have. As it was, he was one of the last to be picked up.

Personally I think its disgusting for a "breeder" to sell a puppy right after they are weaned, it really shows you where their TRUE interests lie. Depending on how well and with what a breeder is socializing the puppy with, then the kind of dog that you want should affect how long a puppy should stay with his littermates.

If most of the puppy's time will be spend with his litter the chances are that he will be a good dog-dog kind of pooch and will perfer dogs over human attention (typically). Whereas if left the minimun appropriate time with the littermates and has more human contact then this dog will tend to be better at dog-human interactions and will seek human attention over dogs (typically). Of course a lot depends on the socialization but still, dogs left longer (e.g. 13 weeks) with their litters are better suited for people that want a dog good at dog-dog interaction and if the person is looking for a dog better at human-dog interactions then less time with the littermates would be beneficial in this case.

Does that make sense? scratch

Maybe breed has a good deal of influence on some dogs becoming more bonded with other dogs than humans, but I would think staying with a breeder longer than usual would be no more of an issue than having multiple dogs living together permanently.

I think 2 months+ is acceptable..anything before that is not right. Puppies need their mommy and proper care.

I'm getting my pup at about 9 weeks, simply because that's when it works out that I can get there to pick him up. I asked the breeder and she said anywhere between 8 and 10 weeks is good.

Yes here in the US thats about the time a good breeder will home pups, but it varies from place to place.

The trainer I work with (and I use her a LOT when adopting dogs from shelters) frequently comments that the dogs that don't know how to play without biting were likely taken from the litter too soon. Grizz-Bang, who is one of the most gentle dogs I've ever known, used to jump up and bite at my shoulder or arm while playing ball. Not in an aggressive manner, but a bite from a Rottie can be painful and serious nonetheless. He simply did not know bite inhibition. I found the probable breeder and learned that he sells the pups as soon as they are weaned (3-5 weeks).

I found a great article on puppy socialization and bite inhibition. It says that pups normally learn bite inhibition from littermates by the age of 18 weeks! This tells me that new owners of MOST pups will have to continue training bite inhibition for several weeks, as most pups are taken from the litter at 6-8 weeks.

Wow, I knew that puppies learned bite inhibition from their littermates but I didn't know at around what time. I guess its an ongoing kind of thing but is more solidly learned about 18 weeks. Hmm very interesting, gotta post this up in its own thread Idea
I guess that's probably why "nipping" and "biting" is such a wide spreed problem with puppies. Idea
