Watch this video and tell me what your thoughts are on that. Do you feel like its scamming your money by donating now or would you try buying actual food and toys and treats and donate them yourself to local shelters? I think it is sad we cannot trust our own government to make sure that money is given to the animals instead of "political" drama. This year I will be donating by buying the actual toys and food/treats and taking them to the shelter.

Oh I haven't liked the HSUS for quite some time now.lol. I've heard that they are among the lines of PETA, but not sure. One person on Dogfancy wrote to the editors saying that they wouldn't buy or read their magazines anymore because they had a whole page dedicated for a HSUS ad.

I'm not sure about trusting the goverment as much as trusting these organizations...but it would definitely be a better idea to donate locally where you know your money is going directly to the animals and not to pay peoples salaries and benefits.

I never knew that any of this was going on until now. I assumed if I donated the money went to save the animals. So I remember my cousin telling me she worked at a local shelter and said even the local donations didn't go to the animals but the ladies who worked there would shove the money in their bra's or purses for themselves since pay was low. So she told me if I wanted to donate not to give money to local ones but instead give an actual item in which they would have to give to the dogs. So I thought the Humane society was part of the government that they would make sure it went to animals not to help support political parties which just sicken me.

Its true that HSUS and PETA are after the same thing. They are both "Animal Rights" groups. They have no concideration for the WELFARE of pets. Their main goal is to remove ALL ownership of ALL pets and domesticated animals including farm animals, service dogs, and basice everyday pets. On a few levels they do good work, but the end result is not about our pets.

While some local rescues and shelters have trouble with donation theft, most do not. If someone is caught stealing donations they can go to prison. If you know of someone, turn them in, they are stealing for pets who need care. It is NO DIFFERENT than someone stealing from an orphinege.

I ONLY donate to shelters and rescues that can prove to me that most of my money goes to the animals within thier walls. If you ask, they are required by law to show you proof of were your donation is going. Because most are 501 c3 nonprofit orgs their books are open and you should be able to get a copy of the balance sheets. At the very least, they should be able to tell you what percent of donations are used for the dogs and what percent it eaten up in administartive costs.

Thats some good info Michael, I didn't know that you could ask for that kind of information. Its good to know, because with all the good pets that can't find good homes I don't think we can afford to let greedy people take the much needed money.

During the flooding in New Orleans with Hurricane Katrina, I know that it was the HSUS who coordinated the transport for the two dogs I fostered. I don't know if they were actually on the front lines trying to save dogs. They did NOT help with transport getting one of the dogs home to it's owner several months later. US AIR transported the dog free of charge.
