Introducing a bigger dog to a smaller one Vide

what is a good way to introduce my mini schnauzer to a smaller dog? he loves playing with other schnauzers and just absolutely loves big dogs, or anything bigger than him. He just met his first smaller/little/toy dog (a mini pinscher to be exact) and the pinscher wanted to play and jump but my lil batman started to bark and freak out, and he NEVER barks, unless he's startled but usually lets out just one bark. this time it was non stop. little punk!

I had mine on a leash but the pinscher was unleashed in my apt's courtyard. Was a bit difficult to seperate them since the MP wanted to play it seems and mine was trying to back away.

what should i do? i want them to play . It my dog just acting dominant? or scared? or shy?

need some advice please! Question

No its probably the novelty of seeing a smaller dog. The over excited behavior of the min pin probably didn't help much either.

If batman doesn't mind being around dogs his size then thats a start, I would suggest you allow him to socialize with dogs his size first, then introduce a calm smaller dog. Every now and then give him treats so that he associates the meeting to something good.

Also watch your own body language. If you are holding in your breath, have a tight hold on the leash, or doing anything that might otherwise communicate that you are uneasy then your dog will also become uneasy and react in a similar manner of the one you just described. (although this time it probably wasn't your fault).

Also instead of having them meet face to face (which is not a canine thing to do anyway), have them meet while both of you are walking. Let them sniff each other, give them a treat and be on your way together (so that they both get to explore with eachother and start to feel more comfortable around each other.

Thats all the advice I have for now, hope it helps!

Take your time and let them meet slowly. A side by side walk is a great way. You can also have the most excited on sit and the lessor one sniff first. Then the other way. With small dogs you can also hold each one and reward them for being calm.
No matter what, you need to introduce them slowly and YOU need to be in complete control. Don't let them meet face to face unless the aggressive dog is fitted with a muzzle.

You can also bring them together from a long distance. Start with all dogs on a leash and at a long distance apart. Then slowly move closer with the new dog. When either dog reacts, say "NO" and move it away and calm it back down. When it is calm, give it a small treat and tell it "Good Dog" or what ever you choose for reward phrase. The point of this is to show the new dog that good things happen when another dog is near.

Continue this until they can sit together quietly. WARNING: this may take weeks ... or it may only take a few hours. If the dog is just excited, it will take less time, if it "wants to kill" you will need to get some help from a professional trainer.

thank you for the advice guys.

Mine was leashed and the mini pin was not. I felt totally comfortable introducing them but it was my fault that the mini pins owner was not there and a 2 other dogs that mine is familiar with were all playing. The mini pin i have seen many times and hes super friendly just likes to be in your face and play. When they sniffed for a good 10-15 sec. i thought we were good..but then the little guy wanted to play and got in batmans face and batman started to bark and i had to separate them.

I'll try again with the other owner and ahve them walk together.

batman has been great playing withdogs his size, but hes never been introduced to one so small. we'll try again another time.. hope it works out eventually Smile
