I noticed that we didn't have a list of toxic foods for dogs here so I thought to post a list. I'm always surprised to hear some people say that they didn't know that such and such were poisonous to dogs, chocolate of course many people know about but there are other things we need to watch out.

-Chocolate, coffee, Caffeinated Tea

-Onions

-Macademia Nuts

-Grapes and Raisins

-Sugarless Candy (Xylitol)

-Pits/seeds, leaves, or stems of apples, cherries, apricots, peaches, plums, and avocados.

-Yeast Dough

I'm sure there are a few others, if you guys would like to post some that don't appear here we can certainly consider them.

K9Domain has some detailed information about why dogs shouldn't eat these things and symptoms to look for: K9Domain | Foods Toxic to Dogs

I don't really think that there is any problem with bread, its the dough that you use to make bread that you shouldn't be feeding your dog. When a dog eats that it ferments in its stomach (much like it would in the oven) this causes it to expand which may cause severe pain but it also produces alcohol which poisons the dog. I'm thinking that live yeast is what you use to make bread...otherwise it wouldn't rise... I think!

I'd have to look that up, I'm not sure if its the tomatoes that aren't good or if its the stem and leaves that are bad. I've actually heard that you can give tomatoe juice to female dogs to help with lawn burns, I don't know how true that is though.

So were the ingredients for chocolate changed?

The reason I ask is because my grandma used to tell us that chocolate being toxic to dogs is false as she always fed her dogs chocolate and they never got ill. I don't give our dogs chocolate just to be on the safe side, but I'd still like to know.

Milk chocolate is much less toxic than bakers chocolate. The toxic thing in chocolate of called theobromine (sp) Milk chocolate (used in common candy bars and commerical chocolates) can still cause problems, but it would take a lot more of it. One 16 oz package of bakers chocolate can kill a 40 lb dog. One 8oz candybar can cause phyical problems in a 10 lb dog.

Yes unfortunately many people will use the "But I've fed it to my dog" arguement but you should never fall for that. What also plays a huge role in whether a dog will get sick from chocolate is their physiology (chemical makeup). Some dogs are more resistant to chocolate than others. My friends dog only ate a little bit of chocolate before she started exhibiting signs of theobromine poisoning.

Good thing you guys don't feed them chocolate...even if it weren't poisonous, dog's don't need sugary foods...it causes serious dental problems.

Yes, the problem is the yeast. It is used in a lot of different bakery products, pastry, buns, pizza dough etc. It can rise in the stomach and will expand. Humans should and other animals should never eat it for the exact same reason.

you forgot the fallowing:
Alcohol,
Most of the House plants,
Salty foods
Fatty foods
Avocado
Grape

also to answer some of the questions:
1. uncooked yeast dough produces ethanol wich i a toxic chemical compound that couses central nervous system and respiratory depression.
2. It is mostly tomato leaves and stems that are poisonous for dogs.

hope this helps.

- I am working on the new iPhone application that has most common dog poisons. So, I am doing my research Smile
