Bare with me here, this blog is somewhat long but wanted to know what you guys think about it. I molded it from the experiences at the park and a scary experience I had yesterday. Hope you like it:

I think a lot of people are fearful of a dog fight when meeting strange dogs. It is a truly rare thing to have two dogs meeting for the first time on neutral territory engage in an actual fight. The number one thing to watch for is the way they approach each other. Making and maintaining eye contact, then approaching head on is probably the best indication that there may be trouble, but not always ends up as a problem. When we approach a strange dog, I tend to ignore the dogs and talk to the owner. After several seconds of the sniff greeting, we move on in a happy mood. At the next meeting with that same dog they will recognize each other and are usually friendly, not as wary, even though the first meeting was kept short.

instead of a polite greeting...SammyJo will right off the bat, posture and try to fight. Some dogs she will tolerate, but most she would rather eat their face as look at them. Its been a looonnnggg 9 years...but we dont know what she lived like the first 2 years. she is much better than she used to be...but still not good. Sad

Your blog article is very good. Controling your dog's energy level at the time of greeting new dogs is very important. Most dogs are, at the very least, excited when they see a new dog. Excited energy can cause a fight just as fast as anti-social behaivor can.

Your A: B: C: list is the most important thing to remember.

Neka is a very shy dog around ppl. But part of her personality is to control crazy or over excited dogs. (Thats why i call her the "Big Sister of the neighborhood"). By controling the excited dogs around her, she controls her own axiety. When we are around an over excited dog, she will grab the excited dog by the neck or put it on the ground and control it until it calms down. It looks bad, but it helps because there is never any fighting in our group.

When I got Patchs, she was "crazy" and I noticed Neka controling her. When it was happening i actually put my hand between Neka's teeth and Patchs' neck. I realized that it was NOT a bite, it was a "grip" like when you grab someone's arm.

When we walk, she trys to do the same thing. At first I thought it was Neka going crazy, but after some study, I realized that she was just trying to control the excitement of the other dog. (In dog talk she was just saying "clam down") Once they were allowed to meet, she was not excited. She was actually very social. And as long as the other dog was "normal" the meeting went great. If the dog got excited, I move Neka away ...

I have learned to "read" the other dog as we approch. If it is excited, I tell the owner that we need to make sure both are calm before we approch. It has worked very well fo me.

Yes, I've noticed this as well, that after the first meeting things will tend to go more smoothly. Also very important what you mentioned about keeping an eye on how the dog's react, lol, I probably should have added that!

The key to helping dogs like this is to keep them at a distance first, play with them, move in a little, continue playing, and move in a little more. You keep doing this until you get a negative reaction from her, then you move back and take it slower. The point at which you start seeing aggressive behavior is called the threshold, and when you train you want to keep your dog under threshold, meaning no bad reactions. Slowly you push that threshold until you can finally have your dog next to the thing she used to be aggressive with. Sounds easy, but this process can take weeks to get right. But also, the good thing to do is to always note any slightest progress and continue trying to get better Wink

Mike- Thats interesting about Neka, so she only does that when the other dog is too hyper, huh?

Schnauzky - LOL, yes it was very scary! She was well built too... I'm just SOOO glad she listened to me, it wasn't until we were a few yards away that she started barking.

Thank you Steven. We have tried this many different times in the 9 years. She does not have a threshold to stay under...she reacts as soon as she sees them. We have just learned what kind of dogs she will tolerate, and which she will absolutely will not. I have to check them out for a bit to see how they interact with Bandit, before I will bring Samm around. She will tolerate very submissive ones...and that is about it. She likes my sisters 2 Goldens and Bandit...because she met them when they were pups and taught them HER rules. lol

Oh how strange. Do you know if she had a bad experience with them when she was younger?

When I first got Nekar, I thought it was HER being hyper b/c she was seeing another dog coming. She would whine and pull on the leash. When they were allowed to get together she would put her mouth on the dog's neck or try to force the dog to submit. A few "cesar followers" keep says she was being dominate. I disagreed. It wasnt until we came across a few CALM dogs that I was SURE she was trying to calm the4 hyper dogs down. When we came across the clam dogs she was still a little excited to meet anf greet them, but her reaction was ALOT less strong and her body posture was completely different.

Sadly we dont know. She was about 2 when we got her...and she was VERY unsocialized ( that is a huge understatement.) most of my friends (even avid dog people) told me that we would not make much out of her..best to put her down before she causes problems. She hated ALL dogs ALL cats ALL children but loved adults. She now has a brother, 2 cousins and the neighbor beagle that she likes...we have 3 cats in the house...and she is very good with the kids, as long as they are not in her face, and respect her. She has come a long way. Like I said...not perfect by any means...but she turned out 1000x better than anyone thought...and I would not take back the last 9 years with her for anything.

Oh I see, well its good that you guys gave her a chance and that she returned the favor as best she could. Seems to be that the aggressive reaction can be caused either by a bad experience she had or just that she never was really exposed to them during her puphood. But I know what it feels to be in your guys' situation, Junior came to me when he was 3 and he wasn't 100% socialized so I'm very fortunate that he doesn't react too bad with other dogs. All we can do is keep trying or at least avoid situations that we know may not turn out so well.
