TEACHING THE SEARCH!!!! Vide

A lot of you are aware that my good friend Tania and her lovely, dippy Doberman are now living near me! We are spending lots of time with our dogs and having a great time. One of Lucy's favourite games is 'find the biscuit' as it encourages her to use her nose and she gets a treat at the end of the search.

i have broken treats in my pocket.
i throw the treat into the grass, into the bushes, into the undergrowth - anywhere i think she cant see it land
i tell her 'find the biscuit'
off she goes, nose down, sniffing, sniffing, sniffing, until she finds it and eats it.

faith is not a natural sniffer, she tends to be more interested in what Tania is doing and where Tania is. However, with lots of encouragement from myself, Faith is now a competant biscuit finder and enjoys her new game as much as Lucy.

this game is great fun for the dogs and encourages them to a) excercise b) use their nose.

have not succeeded in getting any pics to upload for you all on here...but they are on the other forum we all use if you want to take a look.

That's exactly how I've started each of my dogs in tracking. I was doing it with Baloo the day after I picked him up from the breeder. Once they know they're supposed to find something, they start putting their nose to the ground!
Even if they don't ever get good at tracking, it's still a fun game for them!

Teaching your dog's how to search for hidden things is a great way to exercise both the body and mind! And for those of us with energetic dogs, its always much beneficial to give them plenty of mental AND physical stimulation!

I've added this game on my site under dog games, but modified it for indoors (you know, for when its rainy), its also good practice to have the dog hold a sit-stay while you go and hide the treat. But for outdoors I think that tossing the treat is a good idea Grin
