Summary from Peteducation: http://peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2089&aid=874

A few facts and tips about keeping your dog's teeth healthy.

-By the age of 4, 70% of dogs start showing signs of some sort of dental problem (e.g. gum disease)

-Good dental hygiene is important in preventing these problems.

You can do the following to keep your dog's teeth healthy:

-Dry kibble helps some, while it doesn't remove plaque 100% it doesn't contribute to it as much as soft foods would

-Give your dog a nylon bone or some other chew toy to help scrape some of the tartar off.

-Brush a couple times a week using tartar control toothpaste.

-Make sure that folds of skin around the mouth are clear of food using dental cleansers

-In cases where tartar build-up is serious, the teeth may need to be scaled and polished. You can do this yourself or have your vet do it.

We got this advice a bit to late. My grandma's dog Maxie has severe gum disease. Our grandmother passed away in November last year so we were taking care of the dogs. One day while feeding Maxie, our mom thought she saw something in his mouth so she looked and she realized that he only had two teeth and one of those was broken. In addition to that, his gums were a sick brown and green color. He later went to the animal shelter, from there we don't know what happened. He was also having trouble finishing his food and we always wondered why, sadly we found out to late.

Hopefully many others can learn from our mistake of not checking and brushing his teeth regularly.

Yes its is very important and yet quite often overlooked. Broken teeth can be especially problematic because they get infected easily.

Sorry to hear that you had to go through that experience K9Guy.
