Besides dogs, what subject matter do you guys know real well? I mean we all have in common that we like and know lots about dogs but many of us also have other hobbies which we know lots about.

I think for me the two (or three scratch ) that I'd have to choose are biology, graphic & web design.

How about you guys?

I am a Certified Dementia Practitioner, which simply means I have good working knowledge of dementia and the problems it can cause. Lots of reading, seminars and tests are required to keep it up. Currently, there are less than 700 of us in the United States. I train other people, including physicians, to effectively work with and understand people with dementia.

I used to be a long distance runner and have competed in 36 triathlons. I only won once, many years ago, but I have always been able to complete them. I was 51 when I last competed (along with my daughter) and am thinking about trying one more this year. So...I know quite a bit about training for these events.

Other than those two things, I'm pretty boring. Maybe even with those two things. Razz

Ann, maybe you could help my aunt. She is only 48 and has dementia, it is pretty bad they said in a few years her brains going to turn to goo and won't be able to even walk anymore. She is very picky on stuff she does and looses things a lot. Anything she could do that involves staying home but working the mind? Keep in mind she is pretty poor so she can't afford like video games and her husband don't allow her to have anymore pets and her dog is 15 and dying and he said no more pets so has to be something she can work her mind on that is cheap and all that. She don't own a computer so that is out and her husband don't allow her to leave the house too. Any ideas?

Well one of my specialties is songwriting or writing. I am good at expressing my feelings and emotions through words. I have tons of songs.

I am really good at decorating. I can decorate for xmas or redecorate my room and my mom always is impressed and so is my friends. My one friend even wanted me to redo her room for her =P I really like decorating too.

Some people say I am good at singing and acting. No idea how good at singing I am, I have been on stage before at my local fair though.

I don't have much talents =P

Wow....do they have an educated guess as to what type of dementia she has yet? That's pretty young, but I've seen even younger with Alzheimer's and Pick's disease. Each type of dementia has their own set of symptoms, although many overlap, and will progress at different rates. I'm only bringing that up because if they suspect Alzheimer's it would be considered early-onset, and is familial. Siblings and children would be at high risk for the same thing to happen.

There are 4 medications that are helpful in slowing the progression of dementia, particularly Alzheimer's. They're expensive, but her doctors office would likely have sample packs, and if not, she could get sample packs from the pharmaceutical company.

An older more sedate pet would be good for her, if someone could change her husbands mind about that. It's important that she get physical exercise, which can be done in the home, and then brain exercise immediately after, a couple of times a day, ideally early morning and late afternoon. Word find puzzles would be a good example of brain exercise if she's already at the point where she's losing things. Soduko is good if she's able to do that, but typically by the time someone is having difficulty with organization, they're already having trouble learning new things. There are simple games based on procedural memory (the same concept used with Montesorri based learning) that she would be able to grasp, such as finishing well known phrases or matching first names with last names of people she knows well or even famous singers or actors.

Send me your email address and I can send a few as attachments, so you can see what I'm talking about. The bottom line is that she will become less and less able to do these things without some prompting and help as the disease progresses.

I usually grab a book and lay down to read and I'm out before I know it...always works for me when I'm not falling asleep.

Hehe Sudoku is fun up until you get to the final few boxes and you figure out that you did something wrong Frustrated
