....of Its Me or the Dog. This is actually the first time I've seen Victoria Stillwell work on a case. I can say I was actually rather impressed. It was an aggression case and I was happy to see that the first conclusion wasn't dominance. She introduced the owners to clicker training and it worked wonders for their dog.... the husband wasn't too cooperative and she got really mad....I was like Shocked

Anyway, this was my first impression, any opinions on her from you guys?

I cant think of an example at the moment, but its stuff like:
She wants the dog to sit down, but instead of just using a sit command, she will make the dog work out what she wants by holding a treat in her closed fist until the dog finally sits. Then she gives the treat.

I guess I'm not a proponant of "capturing a behaivor" ...

But dogs pick up body language and signals much faster than they do verbal commands, at least on a consistant basis. If the response to verbal is intermittent, non-verbal is definitely what should be used, and then blend verbal in as you go. I didn't see the episode, but would assume that's what she was going for.

Oh I see what you mean. Yes actually thats the method many clicker trainers (such as Karen Pryor) use, its operant conditioning at its finest. They actually don't like using verbal commands because clicker training and operant conditioning is all about the dog doing what it wants and getting rewarded for doing something the owner thinks is good. Their methods consists of giving a "request" or "opportunity for reinforcement" rather than to give "commands". So in essence, they won't tell the dog "lay" they'll just wait until the dog does it because it wants to and click when it does. Its as you said, capturing the behavior. Takes LOTS of patience, but dogs that are trained in this way are more likely to "throw behaviors at you" until they find out what it is you want them to do.
