Not too long ago a friend of mine asked be about lawn burns thought to write up a summary of a very good article I found on peteducation here: http://peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2095&aid=1493

Lawns burn because a dog's urine is high in nitrogen and while plants need a little of it (such as in fertilizer) too much can definitely be a bad thing.

The first part of treat lawn burn is making sure that its your dog and not a pest infestation or someone elses dog.

Once that is done here are few things you can do to minimize lawn burn:

-Pour a couple cups of water onto the spot where the dog urinates. Many dogs have specific spots to go potty so this shouldn't be too hard.

-Feed high quality food that doesn't exceed the dog's protein requirement, too much protein or less digestible food adds more nitrogenous waste to the dog's urine.

-Encourage your dog to drink more water to help dilute the urine.

-If possible replace the grass with more urine resistant grass such as perennial ryegrasses and fescues, Kentuky Bluegrass and Bermuda seem to be the less resistant.

-Reduce stress on the lawn by not over or under fertilizing it and by watering it frequently.

Its probably the most common prevention method I've heard...I don't have a lawn so no worries here! (yet)

Oh wow! affraid But are potty areas in one spot or is it everywhere? I think that if a pooch has a specific potty area it shouldn't be too hard to water that spot to make sure there is no lawn burns but if its just random...that I can see as being a problem. Watering too often might be something others might not be able to do either because of water restrictions (like here in so cal).

Im trying to get them to use the area back by the creek. (If you see some of the videos, it it the area in the background, by tha trees). It is an area about 20 ft square. In the past they have used the whole back yard.

Use Peletized Lime, it reduces the alkeline in the soil. Water, Lime, Water then put resistant seed. Use organic fertilizers always. Sorry not preaching, just my "business" lol

My lawn is in such sad shape that I doubt I would notice a burn. It just does not want to grow. Weeds are doing great though.
Ah well, less mowing.
Turfgirl, I have a question if you would not mind? I have a major dandelion problem here. I do not want to use chemicals, I have a goldfish pond and there are lots of animals in my yard any ideas?

Thank you for the info! I really thought that the more urine in your plants, the healthier they get.
