PostSubject: Animal Control Externship   Animal Control Externship Icon_minitimeTue Jun 15, 2010 8:24 pm

So today was my first day of my externship at animal control. I was excited and at the same time I wasn't sure what to expect.

Getting there was interesting, I looked up a map and memorized it...let say it wasn't too accurate.lol. When I got to the facility I wasn't too impressed (I was expecting something else?) but once I got inside it was a little better. Met the vet tech who was really nice and let me follow her around to see what she did with the new dogs/cats. It wasn't even 5 minutes after I was holding a kitten that I got kitty-poo on my scrub Frustrated She said it happens all the time ^_^

She let me fill the vaccine needles and some other stuff, I learned quite a bit in the short time I spent with her.

Note worthy things that happened? The vet tech I was with started to fume over an owner that had recently (a day or two before?) came to get their lost dog (paid the fine and money for chipping), well today that same dog ends back at the shelter and she already knew who the owner was, the owner came and this time didn't want to take the dog, they signed over custody.... she was sad and at the same time really angry, I let her rant a bit, its easy to understand why she felt that way.

Next noteworthy and sad thing was an idiot that came by the shelter with his family. There were two GSD's that had some aggression issues (actually one was a guard dog) and one of his little girls tried to stick her hand inside, he yelled at her for trying to do so, which wasn't a bad thing. The dumb part was what he did next, he stuck his hand inside and said "You have to dominate them" and put his hand on one of their heads and a snap later pulling out a hand that was bleeding quite a bit. Everyone that worked in the kennel was furious...because that effectively squashed any chance that dog had for adoption (although it was slim). He was warned not to go near, the dog had a warning sign and regardless he gets bit.... Mad

So thats pretty much it! I got back tomorrow, so lets see how that turns out!

People that work in shelters need to vent pretty frequently. I've volunteered at the shelter here off and on for about 14 years and I swear there are times I just have to get away from and stay away for awhile. It's not the dogs or the cats that are the problem. I think you aleady get it.

It sounds like you had a busy day ...

and BTW, "Idiot" is IMHO being way to kind when being used to explain the guy that put his hand inside the kennel. Frankly, I've seen smarter boxes of breakfast cereal ...

Had I been there, I'd have looked him in the eyes and said: "So how did that whole dominance thing work for you?!?!?!? "

ROFL This guy should have NO PROBLEM making the top ten for a 2010 darwin award!!! ROFL

Well last update on externship!

Actually I already finished Nervous My last day was Friday! I was just so busy I didn't really get a chance to do much on the net.

Good thing is I didn't have to clean anything! Phew! I got to follow the vet tech around and help with the health checks. Grin

Honestly how the shelter gets pets is really sad.... I mean we all know about how people turn their dogs and pets in but one thing is hearing or reading it and another is sitting right in front of the person giving such lame excuses.... This one guy came and dropped off an 8 month old pitbull mix....such a handsome (brindle)dog and wonderful temprament...just because he didn't have time for it, and his son wasn't taking care of him.... I'm sure stuff like that is common though....

Well even though I was finishing up, one of the kennel assitants and the vet tech I was working with said I should apply to continue volunteering! I got the application but I got to call still. But I'd like to continue volunteering for a while Grin

Good luck with the volunteer job. Shelters can make you pretty cynical toward the human race!
Have to say though, I'm pretty impressed that you're willing to do it! I know how hard it is!

Oh I know what you mean, I don't do it because I want to interact with those people that want to drop their dogs there, just doing it for the animals Wink And its good to be around people that have, more or less, the same feelings you do for the animals! (talking about the other volunteers of course!)

I forgot to say Congrats. Sorry, I get caught up in so much and like Sam told me .... I dont pay much attention to my friends lives...im going to change that starting NOW! lol. So congrats =) I think it is really great to see you working with animals and enjoying it. I have to ask though, do any of the dogs ever scare you? Like do you ever have a fear or being bit? I love dogs/animals but that would be my biggest fear lol.

Thank you. I'm not really scared mainly because I know which ones to be careful of and which ones are ok. However, I do think twice about those dogs that sit there and look at me and are slowly wagging their tails back and forth. In the time I was there the only ones that I was warry of was the two german shepherds that had aggression problems. The pitbulls were constantly barking but once they see you with food its all love and kisses Grin
