I think you are doing most things correctly. Are you using a kennel for sleeping? This may help in the potty training.

If you are having problem controling him, put him on a long leash. Yes, even in the house! This will give you much better control as you can stay connected with him. Don't leave it on him if you arent working with him as you do not want it to get cought on something and hurt him.

As for chewing on the paper, simply make a correction. The "rule" is dont chew on that. The correction is a sharp "NO" as you move him away using the leash.

Since he was removed from his litter mates 5 weeks to early, you need to become his mate! When he does something you don't like (aka biting, pottying in the wrong place or anything else for that matter) you need to speak dog to him! By this I mean: When a puppy bites one of his mates, the mate will SQUEAL or YIP in a very high pitch. So everytime Zappa nips or bites, You must do the same. Your timing is VERY important. You must do it at EXACTLY the second he nips. If you do it correctly the problem should correct itself rather quickly. But remember, Beagles are stuborn, so just be very consistant with the training.

The chewing may very well be a teathing issue. The best thing for it would be to get a few old towels or wash rags and twist them tightly and tie them up. Then get them wet and freeze them. When he starts to chew, give him one. The towel will give him something that is OK to chew, and the cold will help with teathing pain.

Playing with him is the key to bonding and creating a trusting relationship. Building the bond now will help you later what you begin training other behaviors. If you follow the advice above, the playtimes will become a fun time for both of you. Get plenty of different toys and find out which one is his favorite. Then use it as a reward for good behavior.

He sounds like a very playful puppy! Grin Even the biting is play to him. It's what he would do with littermates, and as Michael said, the littermates would yelp to alert that a bite was too hard. He'll eventually learn to stop putting his teeth on human flesh if you yelp and turn away, completely stopping play whenever his teeth touch you. Bite inhibition begins with learning from mother and littermates, but it is ongoing for several months for most dogs.

Do you have clickers available to you? I got my first pup two years ago (although have had many adult dogs) and the mental stimulation of teaching him to touch or hold his nose or paw to an object to get the click and then the treat wore the pup out faster than running around in the yard. It was also a fun game for us.

You don't want to crate as punishment, but if you can anticipate his agitation, even if it's in play, and crate him for short periods of time each day accordingly, you can sidestep some of the issues. Putting him in the crate during human mealtimes would be a good example. I would not allow him on furniture if he is acting that way.

As for clickers, they're all about the same, although make slightly different noises. He may be startled by one at first but as soon as he figures out something good comes right after that sound, he'll start responding. I highly recommend them but just remember that if there's a click, there has to be a treat or other reward, even if you click accidentally.

you should try to associate the click with a desired behavior, like a sit, or down, or touching something you put on the floor in front of him. The clicker is great for shaping things to exactly what you want. I'm going to see if I can find a good video to explain better.

You'd love a clicker. You can mark a desired behavior instantly, and the dog knows that noise means he got it right and that a treat is coming.
So glad to hear there's progress! Very Happy
