California is overflowing with homeless Chihuahuas. As reported by the LA Times and other sources, shelters in California have more Chihuahuas than they know what to do with. This is not really the case in other parts of the US. In fact, many of these Chihuahuas have been sent of different regions where demand is high and little dogs are few.

What caused the overabundance? It was probably a combination of several things. First of all, Chihuahuas have been among the most popular of all dog breeds for several years. Secondly, certain celebs have made these "purse dogs" look like the hottest thing in fashion. The film Beverly Hills Chihuahua probably didn't help this situation either.

No matter what the reason for the surge in popularity, the reason they are all homeless probably comes down to two things: 1) The economy, and 2) people got in over their heads. Though they are adorable and wonderful dogs, Chihuahuas are not right for everyone. They are tiny and fragile in physique, but tough and stubborn in personality. They do not always play well with others - especially children, and especially without proper training. Yes, Chihuahuas need more than to be carried around in little pink bags. They need training, socialization and everything else all dogs need. Give them these things, and you can end up with quite an amazing dog.

I cant argue with any of that! Like all breads that go thru popularity spurts there are always going to be a surplus of dogs in shelters. The problem is that ppl are in a "self gratification" mod. They buy a dog without doing the homework.

As we have talked about hundreds of times in the past few years: Picking the "Right Dog" for your knowledge level and lifestyle needs to be the key.

I remember when I got Chip in '92 ... It was Just after the 101 Dalmatian mover was re-issued by Disney. It had been running in the theaters for about 3 months and there was a huge number of dalmatians being sold (most were not pure breeds) and they were having lots of health issues with them. 10's of thousands were being turned into shelters and they were not coming back out.

It was really said. Ive also seen it with GSD's and Labs too.

That's why it is SO important for us to tell ppl that buying a dog should NOT be an impule purchase.

I completely agree Michael, there have been some efforts (not a lot) to circumvent this problem by making pure breds look like mutts in movies (like in Fluke). It sure helps, I wish that they would only use mutts in movies, maybe more would be adopted out?

that's really unforunate. Animals should not be a fashion statement or a phase. they need care, love, and proper training and shouldn't be tossed just because they are not "cool" or "in style" anymore.

I hope that can change and they get better homes.

I think people figure out that dogs aren't just status symbols when the dog starts chewing their shoes and digging in the backyard because they didn't take time to train the pooch ROFL Nervous

This kind of thing has been happening for years. Too many people treat dogs like fads.
What is in one year is out the next!
During the second world war German dogs in England were abandoned by the hundreds and the British Bull dog became the rage. After the war the Bull dog was abandoned.
When Lady and the Tramp was released the Cocker Spaniel was all the rage. Lassie and Rin Tin Tin had the same kind of following.
It never changes.

Very good point. It was the same when 101 Dalamtions came out.

The only exception might actually have been when the "Beethoven" movies came out, although Im sure there was probably a rise in popularity there too!!!

Very true! I don't think it would be such a problem if only people took a few hours out of their day to really research that breed. study
