PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- A Treasure Coast dog is recovering after being dragged behind a pickup truck for nearly two miles.
The Humane Society of St. Lucie County said the pit bull mix underwent surgery Tuesday morning to have two toes amputated.
Port St. Lucie police said Napoleon Davis, 31, was taking Holly to the Humane Society and placed the dog in the bed of his pickup truck with a 15-foot leash still attached.
Witnesses said they saw the dog jump out of the truck and get dragged along the roadway for about 1.9 miles. Those witnesses were finally able to flag down Davis and got him to stop.
Davis was arrested on an animal cruelty charge.
Holly was also treated for cuts and road rash and is said to be in excellent condition, but Dr. Leonard Fox said she "has a long road to recovery."
