Nobody knows a dog like his/her owner. I don't think that a trainer or vet could even know a dog better than their owner, its also one of the reasons why its important to establish a good relationship with your dog! But why bring this up? Well today got an email newletter about signs you should watch out for in your dog that might tell you he/she is sick ( http://dogs.about.com/od/veterinarycare/qt/whentocallvet.htm?nl=1 ). Usually we may notice if something is wrong with our dogs even if others around us may not notice. But here are some things to look for that might warrant a call the vet:

They include:

-Discolored or blue gums
-Trouble breathing
-Loss of consciousness
-Dizziness or walking around in cirlces
-Being unable to walk
-Distended Abdomen
-Seizures
-Signs of severe pain
-Body temp of more than 104 or less than 99

And if you notice any of the following presist for more than 2-3 days it might be best to call a vet:

-Not eating
-Being too tied
-Vomiting
-Diarrhea
-Lameness
-Excessive salivations
-Incontinence (potty accidents)
-Constipation
-Severely flaky/irritated skin
-Wheezing
-Nasal Discharge
-Shows signs of mild pain

Its always better to be safe than sorry, so if you think that something is not right with your dog make sure to give your vet a call to see if they can help you cure any problem there is or tell you if there even is a problem.

Thats a great list. I think it would be invaluable to the first time dog owner or someone that is not as "in tune" to their dog.

I think that most dog owners can tell when their dog is not feeling well.

Yes being in tune with your dog is a good thing, while this may not technically count as being sick, I do know when an earthquake is going to happen because Junior seems a little strange, usually I'm the only one that notes his behavior but here in So Cal a dog that can tell you when earthquakes are going to happen is very valuable!

I was told at a very early age to watch animals when a spring or summer storm was possible. They will show signs if the storm is going to be bad.

Chip would actually go to the basement if there were tornadoes in the area. Neka does the same thing but not as early in the storm. We havent had any bad storms since I got Patchs so I'll have to get back to you on her reaction!!! Wink

Lexcee having a bad day, a little vomitting and very lethargic. She is drinking but not eating. I am paranoid when it comes to her lol, so will see how she does tomorrow and go from there. Alot of flu bugs going around and super cold here. I have no hesitation in going to the vet with her after all that is why I got the pet insurance this time. Hugs Susan and the little princess

Sad Thanks Michael, have to admit, trying not to worry. I know I have gotten way too close to her but she is so sweet. She is such a small girl only 7 pounds and I just hate to see her look so sad, but we all as pet owners just give over our hearts so we cannot help but hurt when they do. Thanks again for your thoughts, you are always there. Hugs Susan xx

Aw, no she's not feeling well? Hope that she gets better soon. Here's a thread of a mixture of bland foods you can give her after vomiting, its easy on her stomach so it shouldn't be a problem. https://k9academy.forumotion.com/dog-nutrition-recipes-f10/after-vomiting-or-diarrhea-t182.htm

My vet said my dog had IBS (just like people get) when she cripping herself all over the place. He said there wasn't much we could do - we give her anti-diarrheals when she seems sick and that seems to help somewhat.

I'm sorry to hear that. I don't know much about IBS in dogs (or humans at that), so I couldn't really comment on the fact. But even though your vet said there is no traditional medicine that will work well, have you tried researching to see if there are natural alternatives to try to cure/ameliorate it? Home remedies are always worth a shot if you do your homework, but sometimes vets don't believe in it or suggest it too often.

Flaky skin or dry skin can be prevented with the use of oatmeal soap. Smile This wonder soap will give your dog that wonderful and shiny coat. You can buy these at your local supermarket.
