- Junior gets his Service Dog certification!
Junior recently received his Service Dog certification from The United States Service Dog Registry (USSDR), an independent registry service that offers self-identification for Service or Assistance Dogs.
"I'm so proud of Junior," Cesar said. "He's been an amazing helper to me and so many dogs, and now he can continue to share his balance with the rest of the world in his service."
Do you think your dog has what it takes to be a Service
Dog?
Although not required by law, your dog should be trained to follow both specific and basic obedience commands, as well as display non-aggressive and sociable behavior in order to be considered an effective Service Dog.
It is recommended that any potential Service Dogs undergo at least 120 hours of professional training to obtain the necessary skills and demeanor. USSDR suggests that every candidate complete the Public Access Test created by Assistance Dogs International, Inc, to fully assess your dog’s ability to function as a Service Dog.
If you would like to learn more about how to register your Service Dog, check out the USSDR website here.

Junior Becomes Service Dog to
Junior Becomes Service Dog IN TRAINING - caps added.
that's a significant difference - especially as the dog is shown with an approx 3.5-inch circular embroidered badge,
of red, white and blue with a dogs head silhouette, on his chest attached to a body-harness, and a certificate
[suitable for framing] held by a smiling CM/DW with a similar logo in grey-tones.
http://www.cesarsway.com/news/foundationnews/Junior-Becomes-Service-Dog-in-Training USSDR
says on their website that all dogs must be trained to public-access standards;
IN TRAINING is not 'fully trained' - many states do not allow SDit-dogs the same rights of access as SDs.
besides which, to my knowledge,
CM/DW has no particular disabilities, and if they are invisible, he still must
acknowledge what the dog does to mitigate his disabilities. he does not have to state WHY he needs an SD;
only what tasks the dog is trained in, to mitigate the disability[-ties].
"helping to train other dogs" is not a service-dog task.
therapy pets who provide social contact and affection, or
Animal Assisted Therapy [AAT-pets] do not have rights of access to public facilities; they enter buildings or other spaces by invitation only.
they are 3 different designations -
* a SERVICE dog is trained for a particular individual to mitigate a disability.
only SERVICE-dogs have public-access and only if they have reached a set standard of demeanor
and cued, trained behaviors.
* an AAT pet works with a
therapist to achieve a goal, again with a particular person - the plan is written
by the therapist and the trainer together, with the goal[s] named by the therapist, and the trainer knowing
what their dog can physically do, or has existing training to cover, or can be trained to do in addition.
animal-assisted therapy may be in a home, an office, a physical therapy clinic, a hospital...
* a pet certified as part of a TEAM to do therapy-visits is a highly-social, bomb-proof dog, who enjoys
interacting with friendly strangers. the dog is not evaluated alone, but with the handler; if there will be
more than one handler, all must be tested and pass with the dog as a team.
therapy-pets are generally tested and certified by one of 3 national organizations in the USA,
and they are covered by group-insurance for liability; hence the requirement that dog [cat, chicken...]
be evaluated as a team: they want to know that both non-human and human are capable + safe;
they don't want liability exposure with a casual drop-in volunteer, who may or may not know the dog,
their cues and training, and abilities or weaknesses.
there are also
military working dogs AKA mil-k9s or MWDs, and
police k9s or
cop-k9s;
these include border-patrol, contraband-detection, arson-detection, and more.
there are
customs-dogs who detect contraband: wildlife, fruit or meat or foods, smuggling...
and
conservation-k9s who find endangered species or their sign: tracks, nests, scat, hair, rubs, wallows, burrows...
there are dogs who work with Fish + Game to find poachers or illegal fishing and so on.
this SD-muddle is a black-eye for CM/DW; there are additionally, multiple confusing and confused,
inaccurate statements about service and/or therapy dogs on the website.
i hope they get this straightened out -
soon. there is more than enuf misinformation floating,
without more being disseminated by persons who promote themselves as professionals, who have
tremendous media-reach and are extremely influential.
With great power comes great responsibility. CM needs to be responsible -
and accuracy and factual content, =really do matter=.oops,
