Do you guys think its a good idea to be giving your dogs supplements if the vet doesn't say they need them and the pooch otherwise looks completely healthy?

I had some Doggie Vitamins left over when Chip passed away. (he was taking them for about 6 months because he wasnt eating very good) ... When I got Neka I had about a 45 day supply left. The vet said it was fine to give them to her but suggested that I only give one ever other or every third day.

He said that it was fine to do it, and it would help keep her healthy.

I think it would keep your dog healthy. We take pills and they make us healthy when we're sick right?

Yes I suppose so, however my train of thought was that many dogs get what they need mostly from their food, if we are feeding them good food that is. I mean if the vet said its alright then I guess it would be good, but sometimes peopel decide that just because they take supplements and its good for them it must be good for their dogs. Anyone else thinks this?

Yes, I think ppl can (and do) over think A LOT of things when it comes to their pets!!! I met a dog owner that thought he should give his dog a bath every week b/c Quote: "they MUST get dirt in a week." So I took time to explain, now the dog doesnt have dandruff and dry skin, and doesnt scratch ALL of the time.

I think mine gets everything he needs and we give him some healthy treats that have calcium in them, as well as peas, carrots, and beans some times, along with his dog food. I would only give supplements if he was deficcient in something or the vet recommended it.

I've changed my mind, I don't think it's a good idea, because the vet knows more than the dog owner unless the dog owner himself is a vet. So listen to your veteran because your vet is an expert in animals.

Yes, although its not wrong to do whatever you think is good for you dog, afterall no dog trainer or vet could know your dog more than you. However when it comes to diet, defeciencies and other factors which you may not be qualified to handle its best to get an expert's "opinion". Wink
